The Frazee gymnastics team built on another level in the program's rebuilding process, capping the 2008-09 season with a strong Section 8-1A meet Saturday in Park Rapids.

The Hornets finished with a team score of 113.425 and was led by senior Alane Sauer, who finished 11th all-around with a score of 32.050.

The senior gymnast had a sticky beam and a personal best in the event with an 8.1 for 13th.

Vaulting her handspring full-twist earned her an 8.7 for 12th, while she marked a 7.5 on bars and 7.75 on floor.

"Alane has been a much valued member to our team, not only for her gymnastic ability, but for her ability to befriend all those around her," said Frazee had coach Aimee Erickson, who also was named Section 8-1A Coach of the Year with the vast improvement of the Hornets.

Quincy Mickelson also hit a personal best, finishing with an 8.45 on vault after establishing good height on her half-on, half-off vault.

"Jessica Irish's early-season ankle injury may have been a blessing in disguise, as she spent a lot of hours on the bars building upper body and core strength," Erickson said. "She learned several release moves and developed beautiful high bar kips."

Co-captain Emma Buhr half-on, half-off handspring on vault continued to be strong, after finishing with an 8.25.

"Her upper body strength has notably improved, as well," Erickson included about Buhr. "Emma hopes to build long hang kips into her routine."

The Perham Yellow Jackets won their sixth straight section championship and will be vying for their sixth-consecutive Class 1A state championship, as well, Thursday inside the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion, starting a 11 a.m.
