Detroit Lakes boy golfers get feet wet in University of Minnesota Invite

The Tri-State Invitational held at the University of Minnesota was certainly a good meet for the inexperienced Detroit Lakes boys' golf team to get their feet wet.

Although they didn't finish in the top 20, the Lakers were introduced to some of the top competition in the state early as DL finished tied for 21st with a two-day score of 650 -- which was 82-over par as a team.

Forest Lake won the meet with a 32-over par 600.

"We are young, but we showed good signs early," DL head coach Bob Gorden said. "Everybody had a few mistakes which hurt, but we are learning and getting better. Now, we just need to be more consistent."

Nate Ginnaty led the Lakers into the clubhouse with a 159 after stroking a 77 Friday and an 82 Saturday.

Karter Smith came in with a 20-over 162, while Ricky Hutchinson (164), Connor Hedstrom (168) and Ross Mickelson (174) rounded out DL's scorecard.

Hudson Carpenter of Stillwater won medalist honors with an even par 142.

The Lakers will play in the Pequot Lakes meet at The Preserve Thursday, then will play in the two-day Grand Rapids Invite Friday and Saturday.

A split squad will travel to Staples-Motley Saturday at The Vintage Golf Course.
