The visiting Staples-Motley softball team was able to capitalize on a few Detroit Lakes mistakes, turning them into a sweep of a Mid-State Conference doubleheader Tuesday at Snappy Park.

The Lakers played right with the Cardinals in game one, but three errors led to three unearned runs in a 5-2 loss, while in the second game, S-M laced eight timely hits to down the home team 11-0 in five innings.

Junior pitcher Callea Butz was uncharacteristically wild in game one, walking Cardinal batters, but striking out seven.

"Callea was uncommonly wild in game one, with a few wild pitches, but she's a good pitcher and will be just fine down the road," said DL head coach Phil Kirchner. "In game two, we simply were not ready to play and not mentally in the game."

The Lakers started off well to open the doubleheader, taking a 1-0 lead after the first inning.

Donna Wicker gained a one-out base on a Cardinal error, and Sarah Wilson promptly knocked her in with an RBI single to left field.

But from then on out, the Lakers managed just three more scattered hits, scoring their second run in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the score 5-2.

The Cardinals gained the lead with a two-run third frame, with Rachel Hoemburg hitting a two-out RBI single.

Heather Zeta added an RBI single in the sixth to aid two more runs and a 4-1 advantage.

Butz allowed four hits in the game, while Wilson had two of DL's four hits.

The game became out of reach by the fourth inning, with four runs in the first and five in the fourth.

S-M accumulated five hits in the fourth, including two doubles off of DL pitcher Cady Cartmell.

They added two more in the fifth to push the game past the 10-run mercy rule.

The Cardinals gained eight hits off of Cartmell, who gave up five earned runs as DL has three errors defensively.

"We are a young team, but they are getting better," Kirchner added. "They'll play through this and hopefully by the end of the year, the younger girls will have figured it out by playoff time."

The Lakers (5-7) will play a conference doubleheader at Pequot Lakes Friday.

Lakers survive bad weather and late rally

A 13-run rally in the fifth inning was barely enough for the Lakers to overcome a stubborn Crookston team Friday under the nasty and cold skies of Snappy Park.

With winds howling and a cold mix of snow and rain pelting the players, the Lakers won a scoring barrage over the Lady Pirates 18-17.

"The weather was miserable for both teams," Kirchner said. "There were obviously a lot of walks and it was hard to pick up the ball. But the girls battled through it and scored enough for the win."

The Lakers accumulated a total of 20 hits to Crookston's five. Wicker had three hits, while Kasey Smith went 3-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs.

Those gaining two hits were Shayna Dugger, Brianna Seebold, Kortni Goettel, Ashley Baer and Jalen Even.

Butz gained the victory for the Lakers.
