Detroit Lakes tennis bounces back with 7-0 win
The Detroit Lakes boys' tennis team had a bounce-back match Tuesday with a 7-0 win over Wadena-Deer Creek at home.
After losing their Mid-State Conference match 6-1 to Park Rapids Thursday, DL head coach Jim Hinson mixed up his normal lineup against the Wolverines -- and it paid dividends.
"We ended up winning in straight sets throughout the lineup," Hinson said. "Junior newcomer (to tennis) Tanner Duncan stepped up into the No. 1 singles match and was behind almost the entire first set, but rallied to win the last three games in a row and (take) the set 7-5.
"He played smart, controlled tennis."
Each of the first and second doubles teams were close, but Jake Hartman and Jesse Meyer prevailed in No. 1 competition, while the duo of Mike Bogda and Tim Fouquette took No. 2.
Hartman and Meyer downed Cody Bain and Taylor Garcia in straight sets 6-2, 6-4, while Bogda and Fouquette won by a pair of 6-4 sets over Michael Paulson and Mike Paavla.
"We were up against less experienced players and I was glad our guys stayed focused and consistent for good wins," Hinson added.
The Lakers are now 2-5 and 2-1 in the Mid-State. They will host Fergus Falls and Thief River Falls Friday for a 1 p.m. start.
