Angels lose to tough Snurdbirds squad
The Detroit Lakes Angels lost to the Midway Snurdbirds 8-4 in non-league play Wednesday night at Washington Park.
Midway, from the Lake and Pine North league, was a 2008 State Amateur tournament team, just as the Angels were.
Midway broke out to a 4-0 lead after its second inning, with leadoff hitter Zach Etter starting the game with a bang with a home run to left off of the first pitch from Angels starter Max Saarinen.
Nick Omberg and Doug Dickey scored for Detroit Lakes in the bottom of the second to cut the Snurdbirds' lead in half.
But the Angels would not get any closer as Midway scored two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and added one in the seventh.
The Angels (5-3) scored their final two runs in the fifth when Taylor Fuhs used his wheels to get home. Fuhs was hit by a pitch, stole second and then scored on an error at first on a grounder by Omberg.
Jake Kiebke brought Omberg in with an RBI single.
Detroit Lakes heads to the St. Cloud tournament this weekend for two guaranteed games.
