Four Detroit Lakes-area divers compete in Star of the North Games

Detroit Lakes area divers who competed in the Star of the North Games included (L to R) Jon Melgaard, Sarah Wilker, Shayna Dugger and Taryn Kobriger.

Four Detroit Lakes area divers endeavored to maintain their competitive form by competing in an off-season diving meet June 21.

DL high school divers Shayna Dugger, Jon Melgaard, Taryn Kobriger, and former Minnesota State University Moorhead women's diver Sarah Wilker traveled to St. Cloud to compete in the Star of the North Games.

The meet featured an unusual competition format by requiring the divers to compete three dives assigned identical degrees of difficulty, as well as three additional dives assigned optional degrees of difficulty.

Competing only in the one-meter competition, Kobriger was awarded fourth place after earning a score of 176.85.

On the one-meter board, Dugger was awarded third place after earning an exact score of 178.

Dugger also received bronze place honors on the three-meter diving board by earning a score of 196.80.

Melgaard took first place on both the one-meter and three-meter boards, as well as earning scores of 214.55 and 214.20, respectively.

For Melgaard and Dugger, this meet was the first time either had competed in a three-meter diving event and both competed several dives that they had only just performed on the day of the competition.

Wilker competed in her first Masters level diving competition after graduating from MSUM this spring.

Wilker was awarded first place on both the one-meter and three-meter boards by earning scores of 201.45 and 233.80, respectively.

The Star of the North Games is Minnesota's own Olympic-style, multi-sport event, which focuses on friendly, participatory competition.

Each year, a different Minnesota community hosts the Games and top-three finishers in any of this year's events are invited to compete in the 2011 State Games of America National Championships in San Diego, Calif.

All four divers plan to compete locally at the Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center as part of the Community wide Swimming and Diving meet to be held in conjunction with the Northwest Water Carnival July 15, beginning at 4 p.m.

Any and all area swimmers and divers are encouraged to take part in this fun event and the public is invited to attend.
