Angels' Huberty tosses shutout against Hawley

Angels' leftfielder Chris Gilson runs across homeplate during Detroit Lakes' 10-0 win over Hawley Sunday.

The Detroit Lakes Angels climbed back into first place of the Hi-10 League with a convincing 10-0 win in Hawley Sunday.

With the combination of Wadena-Deer Creek losing and the Angels winning, DL now sits atop of the standings with a 7-2 league record.

The start was fast and furious for the Angels, as Taylor Fuhs started the game with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on the errant throw.

Hot-hitting Chris Gilson followed with a walk, stole second with Fuhs taking home on the throw to put the Angels up 1-0.

Zach Fulmer stroked a two-run home run to give the Angels a 3-0 lead after one inning.

More was added in the second inning, as Kyle Danner, Matt Huberty and Bryan Buhr started the inning with consecutive singles.

Fuhs followed with an RBI to bat in Danner on a fielder's choice. Gilson was hit by a pitch to reload the bases for Nick Omberg, who singled in both Huberty and Fuhs.

A double by Phil Doll scored Gilson to give the Angels a commanding 7-0 lead.

In the third inning, Danner singled to start the inning.

Huberty railed a double to put runners at second and third, in which Buhr walked to load the bases.

Gilson drove in Danner and Huberty with a single, while Doll doubled to score Buhr for the 10-0 advantage.

Offensively for the Angels, Huberty hit for a perfect 3-3 with a double, Danner was 2-4, Doll 2-4 and Fulmer had a two-run homer in four at bats.

Huberty started on the mound and went the first six innings, giving up five hits and striking out nine.

Justin Berg closed out the game in the seventh.

The Angels next game was Wednesday night at Washington Park against the Fergus Falls Hurricanes.

This will be the first game between the teams since the Hurricanes won a 3-2 game in 11 innings last year in the State tournament.

DL will host Frazee Saturday for the annual July 4 game, for a 7 p.m. start.
