Recent games between the Wolf Lake Wolf Pack and the Midway Snurdbirds have turned out to be barnburners.

Sunday's Lake and Pine North Division championship matchup between the teams didn't turn out that way, though, as Wolf Lake beat Midway 13-2 at home.

The Wolf Pack turned on the offense early, scoring all of their runs in the first two innings.

"We hit the ball well in the first couple of innings there, and when (we) didn't, it found a hole," said Wolf Lake manager/second baseman Boone Caughey. "We'll take it."

The first inning was telling as to the final outcome, as Wolf Lake scored eight runs and brought 13 hitters to the plate.

Snurdbirds starter Tony Meech loaded up the bases and gave up a single to Tom Juberian to bring in one run.

Jack Juberian's turn came next, and he brought two in with a single.

Meech allowed a run to come in when he missed first baseman Jeff Marjamaa on a play to first that let Tom Juberian score.

Caughey singled to bring in two more runs.

He and Max Knoll would later score to bring the run count to eight.

Midway tried to rally in the top of the second. But Wolf Lake starter Shane Hendrickson bore down with runners on second and third. With two outs, he struck out James Burkman to end the inning.

Wolf Lake struck for another five runs in its turn of the second.

Jack Juberian tripled and scored Tom Juberian for the first run of the frame.

The Wolf Pack loaded the bases after reliever Jake Lund walked Knoll. Lunde got an out after Caughey grounded to Snurdbirds third baseman Kyle Dormanen, who threw to home to force out Jack Juberian.

With two outs and the bases loaded, Lund walked Ron Litzau, which allowed Cory Pudus to come home from third.

Luther Kangas then cleared the bases with a double to score Pudus, Knoll and Caughey. All nine batters came to the plate for Wolf Lake in the second.

Neither team would score again until the seventh -- the last inning because of the 10-run rule -- when Midway put its two runs up.

Brad Lusti led off with a single and Pete Marjamaa scored him with a double.

Pete Marjamaa came home after Wolf Lake shortstop Eric Pilgrim committed a handling error during Drew Rasmussen's at bat.

Hendrickson went the distance in allowing seven hits.

Both teams move on to the Region 16C tournament, with play beginning Saturday.

The teams play in Dent, with Wolf Lake taking on the Alexandria Senators at 11 a.m., and Midway playing the Fergus Falls Hurricanes at 2 p.m.

"We're just going to try keep doing what we've been doing," Caughey said. "Have the pitchers throw strikes and try to make the plays. That's what got us there in the past, and that's what we'll try to do."

Caughey said his main concern for regionals is the depth of the pitching staff, especially with the possibility of playing three games over two days.

"The guys that are pitching will have to go deep in the game," he said. "And it's about getting hot at the right time."

If either teams wins, they head to Perham later that day for the second round, while the losers of the first round matchups stay in Dent for an elimination game.

Tournament play continues Sunday in Perham with winner's and loser's bracket games.
