Turnovers sink Vikings

Early turnovers sunk the Pelican Rapids football team in its home and season opener against the Perham Yellowjackets, as the visitors blanked the Vikings 32-0 Friday.

The first two Viking possessions resulted in a fumble and interception, which in turn led to a 14-0 first-quarter advantage for Perham.

The Yellowjackets added two more touchdowns in the second for a 26-0 halftime lead, and capped the scoring in the third.

"The early turnovers really put our young team in a tough spot and Perham took great advantage of them," said Pelican Rapids head coach Dave Haugen. "They are too good of a team to give them a short field to work with and an early two-score lead. I expect that our team will learn a lot from this and play some very good football before the season is over."

The Perham defense limited the Vikings to 64 yards rushing, while compiling 229 on the ground.

Quarterback Ben Bucholz connected twice with Perham wide receiver Cody Soderstrom for two long touchdowns of 38 and 74 yards.

Soderstrom finished with 112 yards on two receptions, while Bucholz had 215 passing yards on a 7-13 night, with three touchdowns.

Pelican Rapids' Casey Bruggeman was 6-11 for 64 yards and two interceptions.

The Vikings had three lost fumbles in the game for a total of five turnovers.

On the opening series of the season, the Yellowjackets recovered a Pelican Rapids fumble to set up their first touchdown.

Chris Scheidecker scored on a seven-yard run for the first score.

The next Vikings possession ended in an interception, setting up Perham's second score.

The Jackets went to the air, with Bucholz connecting with Soderstrom on a 38-yard scoring pass play.

Charlie Schmitz ran in the two-point conversion to give Perham a 14-0 lead less than half way into the first quarter.

Perham scored two more times in the second quarter for the big 26-0 halftime advantage, as Bucholz hooked up with Soderstrom again -- this time on a 74 yard pass play.

Perham got on the board one more time with less than one minute left in the first half, when Ben Waldon was on the receiving end of another Bucholz touchdown pass, this time from 24 yards out.

The last touchdown of the game came on a 10-yard run by Charlie Schmitz.

The Vikings (0-1) will next host Pequot Lakes, which lost to Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton in their season opener.
