Laker swimming and diving opens against one of North Dakota's best

The official start of the 2009 season could not have been any more difficult for the Detroit Lakes girls' swimming and diving team, which traveled to face one of North Dakota's top squads in West Fargo.

Although the score heavily favored West Fargo by a 131-55 margin, some positive steps were taken by the Lakers.

For one, DL earned the top three spots in diving, led by senior Shayna Dugger with a score of 216.61, with juniors Bre Halbur (186.20) and Taryn Kobriger (185.35) in close tow in second and third, respectively.

"Shayna had a great meet and taking one, two and three helped out," said DL head coach Carol McCarthy. "Overall, we had a good showing by our younger girls and it gave them a good feel of how a dual meet is run."

The potent and deep West Fargo lineup won every event but diving and the 100-yard butterfly, which was taken by Class 1A state runner-up Melissa Paakh with a time of 59.27.

Paakh also rang up a second place in the 500 freestyle with a mark of 5:41.09.

Junior Libby Larson was second in the 100 freestyle, while Ashtin Spies took a silver in each of the 100 backstroke (1:07.94) and 200 individual medley (2:28.57).

"Most of our older girls on the team swam off-events, because they want to swim every event at least once this season," McCarthy said. "One thing they did realize is they need to work on their speed and turns and that comes down to focusing."

The Lakers were in Bemidji Saturday and will travel to Crookston for a multi-team invite Thursday, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
