Lack of depth keeps swimmers from first
The only aspect which held the Detroit Lakes girls' swimming and diving team from taking first place in the Crookston Invite Thursday was depth.
It certainly wasn't performance, because the Lakers were able to claim a dozen first or second-place finishes in the four-team invite.
"We had a great meet," said DL head coach Carol McCarthy. "It was a case of lack of depth for us.
"The swimmers are clicking more into shape as we work on speed at practice, and we've had a few meets to get into competition mode."
Two Laker relay teams won their respective events, including the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle teams.
The foursome in the 200 free relay included Andrea Weiss, Ashtin Spies, Melissa Paakh and Libby Larson -- which finished with a top time of 2:02.22.
The 400 freestyle relay included Spies, Weiss, Larson and Paakh, and they combined for a time of 4:25.88.
There were a couple of events in which DL swept the top two places, as well.
Larson and Miranda Olson were first and second with times of 5:03.58 and 5:14.52, respectively.
The Laker diving team remained on top of the standings, as Shayna Dugger won another meet with her 197.65 score. She was followed by Bre Halbur, who notched a 184.85.
"The divers are looking good, as they work on more complicated and higher degree of difficulty dives," McCarthy added.
Paakh was victorious in a couple of races after taking the 200 individual medley with a 2:33.94 and dominating the 100 butterfly with a 1:06.82.
DL finished second to Thief River Falls, 606-514, for the team title.
The Lakers have yet to have a full squad participate in practice, due to some illness throughout the squad.
With it being early in the season, McCarthy said she is taking precautions to keeping the team healthy for the entire season.
"We are working to stay healthy and taking extra precautions, as a few swimmers and divers have missed practices and meets due to flu-like symptoms," the DL coach said.
The Lakers will host Staples-Motley Tuesday inside the BTD Aquatics Center, starting at 6 p.m.
