West Central pulls off last-second TD to spoil Vikings' first win

The West Central Area Knights keyed an 18-14 victory over Pelican Rapids with a strong fourth quarter after trailing 14-6.

The Knights came up with two touchdowns to pull off a late come from behind victory.

Pelican Rapids had the good start they wanted scoring on their first possession when Casey Bruggeman hooked up with Cris Bakken for a 53-yard touchdown pass.

The Cris Molina kick put the Vikings up 14-0.

Pelican Rapids intercepted a WCA pass on the next possession, but wasn't able to take advantage of it before turning it over themselves on a fumble.

Late in the first quarter WCA got on the board for the first time on a 55 yard run by Cole Amundson.

The extra-point kick just missed leaving the Vikings with a one-point lead.

The scored stayed that way until late until the third quarter.

The Viking defense played tough in the third quarter with much of the play taking place in the Pelican Rapids end of the field but the Vikings weren't able to capitalize on the field position until Alex Klovstad scored from six yards out and the Molina PAT put the Vikings up by eight.

The WCA offense got going in the fourth quarter and pulled to within 2 when Colton Blascyk scored from six yards out.

The Vikings defense came up with a big stop on the two point conversion to maintain the slim lead, but the Knights weren't done.

With 12 seconds left in regulation, Colton Blascyk connected with Bryce Olson on a 10-yard touchdown pass for the game winner.

"I thought we had several players play very well and we definitely played very hard," said Pelican Rapids head coach Dave Haugen. "WCA was just able to come up with one more play than us late in the game."

Lance Erickson and Dan Wood had excellent games on the offensive and defensive lines, Haugen included.   "Cody Wahlstrom is continuing to play well at inside linebacker and overall our defensive secondary played a strong game," the Pelican Rapids coach said.

Next week Pelican Rapids (0-4) will travel to Warroad (2-2).
