Good, fast start keys Mahnomen's 32-12 win
Two quick scores by the Mahnomen football team set a winning tone for the Indians, who defeated Fertile-Beltrami on the road 32-12.
After scoring on their opening drive, the Indians forced a fumble on the Falcons' first play, then proceeded to march down for a 16-0 lead after a pair of quarterback Dylan Stevens' one-yard touchdown plunges.
Stevens added another short dive into the Falcon end zone in the third quarter for a 24-0 advantage, before Fertile-Beltrami scored 12 unanswered points on a Lucas Solie 2-yard run and a Mike Dunn 35-yard fumble return to cut into the deficit 24-12.
But an Alex LaVoy 22-yard touchdown run with 1:39 left in regulation salted away the game for the Indians, who improved to 3-2 on the season.
"Defensively, we played well for most of the game," said Mahnomen head coach John Clark Jr. "This was especially nice to see considering we made serval position changes on defense."
LaVoy eclipsed the century mark rushing with 108 yards on 18 carries, while Stevens had 52 yards on the ground and three touchdowns.
F-B's Lucas Solie rushed 18 times for 90 yards.
Mahnomen also keyed its win with four two-point conversion runs for some added cushion.
"Those extra points helped keep a safe lead, as Fertile made some plays to get back into the game in the second half," Clark said.
Mahnomen will host 4-1 Lake Park-Audubon Friday for a 7 p.m. start.
