The last time the Detroit Lakes girls' swimming and diving team was in the situation where the meet came down to the last event, the Perham Yellowjackets nudged them out.

Thursday's finish was much different, as the Lakers this time won the 400 freestyle relay and also took third to clinch the win over their Mid-State Conference rival, 95-91.

The Laker foursome of Andrea Weiss, Libby Larson, Miranda Olson and Melissa Paakh keyed the victory by beating the Panthers' top team by 1.20.

DL's B squad, which included Maddy Schiller, Ashtin Spies, Taylor Long and Kayla Lang, also beat out their Park Rapids counterparts for third.

"A lot of our B-squaders stepped up tonight," said DL head coach Carol McCarthy. "We had a few first place finishes, but we have been working on taking those third through fifth-places and they really came through."

A number of section-qualifying times were also hit by DL in the meet, as well.

"Everything worked out tonight, everyone's timing was on," McCarthy said.

The Lakers won nine total events, including the 400 freestyle relay.

The meet was book ended with a win, with a first in the 200-medley relay to start it off.

Kayla Lang, Paakh, Libby Larson and Weiss set the tone with a 2:04.18 to win the 200-medley relay.

"We pulled that relay team back together and it was a good way to start out the meet," McCarthy said. "It was a good strong start and a strong ending."

Paakh won her two individual events, taking the 100-butterfly with a sub-minute 58.81 and the 100 breaststroke with a 1:09.89.

Libby Larson was victorious in the 200 freestyle (2:08.46) and the 500 freestyle (5:37.02).

Miranda Olson picked up big points by taking second in the 500 behind Larson, while winning the 200 individual medley with a 2:27.88.

The 50 freestyle was also another key event, as Weiss took top honors with a 26.76, while diver Bre Halbur knocked off a bunch of time for a second-place finish and a 27.54 time.

"We have been tapping into our divers for some swimming events, and they have been stepping up," McCarthy said. "Bre's second place in the 50 was huge. She just knows how to carry herself in the pool and is in tune with her body."

In diving, DL took the top two spots, with Shayna Dugger taking top honors with a 236.45 and Halbur second at 212.15.

The Lakers competed in the section True Team meet in Bemidji Saturday, and will host newly added section opponent Bemidji Tuesday inside the BTD Aquatics Center, starting at 6 p.m.
