Erlandson runs rampant over Pelican Rapids

On a night when the weather became a popular topic with the snow and wind, the Pelican Rapids Vikings and Breckenridge Cowboys hooked up for a HOL battle.

With the snow falling in a constant pattern, Stephen Erlandson ran rampant on the white field for 226 yards, as the Cowboys were able to put together a 28-7 victory for an HOL win.

After a scoreless first quarter, Breckenridge got on the board first with a 9 yard run by Stephen Erlandson.

The PAT kick failed and the Cowboys had the 6-0 lead.

With the teams exchanging possessions in the rest of the second quarter, the Vikings appeared to catch a break when the snap to the Cowboys punter went over his head.   Taking over with good field position and a little over a minute in the half the big break swung in favor of the Cowboys, as a fumble recovery was scooped up and returned about 55 yards for a Breckenridge touchdown and a 12-0 lead heading into halftime.

The third quarter was scoreless, but Pelican Rapids started having some success moving the ball.

The Vikings took possession with just over seven minutes left in the third quarter and used 16 plays on the drive, getting into the red zone early in the fourth quarter.

Pelican Rapids couldn't finish the drive, however, and turned the ball over on downs.

A big 87-yard touchdown run by Stephen Erlandson broke the game open for the Cowboys.

After the two-point conversion, Breckenridge had a 20-0 lead in the fourth quarter.

The Vikings did come back and get on the board on their next possession, when Alex Klovstad picked up a 25-yard touchdown run. The PAT kick by Cris Molina got the Vikings to within 20-7.

Breckenridge answered right back, with Erlandson gaining his third touchdown of the day on a 37-yard run.

The PAT resulted in the final score of 28-7.

Alex Klovstad led the Vikings in rushing, with 103 yards on 21 carries, as the Vikings ran for 203 yards on the night.

"We were able to put together some good drives, but weren't able to consistently come up with the play we needed to sustain the drive or get into the end zone," said Pelican Rapids head coach Dave Haugen. "While we did some things very well, we need to continue to improve so we can finish off drives. We were able to complete a few passes with Casey Bruggeman connecting with three different receivers to pick up some valuable yards and key first downs."

Next week, Pelican Rapids will play Wadena-Deer Creek in the Fargodome at 5:45 p.m.
