Hockey fundraiser on Friday
It's not a surprise that hockey is an expensive sport to play.
But to keep the cost low for players and increase participation, the Detroit Lakes Youth Hockey Association helps out. The third annual DLYHA fund raising dinner will be held Friday, Oct. 23 at the Speak Easy in Detroit Lakes to give the association the money it needs for the season.
Brian Burhans, a DLYHA board member, said that registration costs bring in less than a quarter of the operating expenses for the association. That leaves $120,000 that needs to be raised.
"This helps keep costs down," Burhans said of fundraising efforts. "It would be too much for the kids to play."
Players benefit from free equipment rental that the DLYHA offers.
The DLYHA also waives registrations fees for new skaters, offers family discounts and scholarships.
The fund raising dinner starts at 5:30 p.m. and includes a prime rib meal.
There will be a live auction, silent auction and raffle prizes.
In addition to the fund raising dinner, the Hockey Hauler Raffle has started.
A $50 ticket gives a buyer a chance to win a 2010 Chevrolet Extended Cab truck.
There are several other Hockey Hauler Raffle prizes ranging from a Kawasaki Mule utility vehicle, televisions, cash and other goodies.
Tickets to the fund raising dinner are $40 each. For tickets, call Scott Sonstegard at 847-4328 or e-mail him at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Hockey Hauler Raffle tickets are available by calling Mike Schlitz ate 850-1112.
