Frazee girls' basketball comes up short in tough game

The Frazee Lady Hornet basketball team opened its season on Tuesday, Dec. 1 and lost an exciting game at Breckenridge 38-37.

Frazee started red-hot, hitting their first six shots en-route to a quick 16-0 lead.

"We came out and executed really well to start the game," said head coach Dave Conzemius. "The kids were excited to play and really took the game to the Cowgirls at the start, which was nice to see."

Breckenridge made some defensive adjustments after the quick start and slowly crept their way back into the game pulling within 27-20 at halftime.

Both teams played some very good defense in the second half, which made it difficult to score. The Lady Hornets led 35-29 with about five minutes remaining before Breckenridge made one final push.

The Cowgirls went on a 10-0 scoring run to take their first lead of the game and Frazee was never able to reclaim the lead despite numerous chances.

"Give Breckenridge credit, they made more plays down the stretch then we did," Conzemius said. "We got the shots we wanted at the end, we just couldn't get them to drop."

The Lady Hornets were led in scoring by senior Jaclyn Mickelson and freshmen Ashley Bachmann with eight points apiece.

Sophomore McKinzie Tangen added six points and junior Sadie Stender had five points and seven rebounds. Mickelson also pulled down seven rebounds and led the team with five assists.

"We are disappointed with the loss but we will learn from this game and get better," Conzemius added. "We played with a lot of heart and hustle, now we just need to correct a few things for future games."

Frazee's home opener is Tuesday, Dec. 8, against Barnesville in the first game of a boy-girl doubleheader at 6:15 p.m.
