Results are starting to show for the Detroit Lakes girls' hockey team's hard work on the ice, as the Lakers picked up their first win of the season Tuesday in Wadena-Deer Creek.

The Lakers (1-6-1) exploded for four goals in the second period to key a 7-2 win over the Wolverines.

DL also quickly answered W-DC's two goals in the third period by scoring 45 seconds after the first one and three minutes after the second.

"That was nice to see our girls respond that way after Wadena scored those two goals," said DL head coach Dan Maloney.

Forward Brianna Seebold has been picking up numerous assists so far this season, but started to find the back of the net Tuesday with a hat trick and two more assists.

"It was good see her get the puck in the net," Maloney said. "She needed that type of game scoring goals."

Shannon Utecht put DL up 3-0 on a power play opportunity after Seebold recorded the first two goals.

Seebold added her third soon after for the 4-0 lead, which was followed by a Callie Johnson power play tally for the commanding 5-0 edge.

Third period goals went to Emily Payne and Johnson.

Amanda Moore had another solid night in net, picking up 13 saves, while the Lakers had 34 shots on net.

"It was a good experience all around for the team," Maloney said.

The Lakers were coming off a 4-1 loss in Sartell Saturday, with Johnson picking up the lone goal and Seebold the assist.

DL outshot the Sabres by a slight 23-22 margin, but Sartell goalie Shelby Gunderson proved her 95 save percentage on the season wasn't a fluke.

"It was a tight game most of the way, but their goalie played well," Maloney said. "We were able to create some scoring opportunities and competed well."

The Lakers will travel to Thief River Falls Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. game.
