The Detroit Lakes wrestling team ran into a couple of well-rounded and physical teams over the course of the week, resulting in a pair of losses.

Fresh off an impressive upset over Perham last week, the Lakers opened their Mid-State Conference season with a 1-1 showing Tuesday.

Staples-Motley showed a physical style of wrestling, downing DL 40-21, while DL toppled Crosby-Ironton 66-14.

The Lakers then hosted Mahnomen/Waubun Thursday, falling to the Cougars 40-22.

"We lost most of the toss-up matches against Mahnomen/Waubun," said DL head coach Rob Ullyott. "The kids wrestled hard and I was not at all disappointed with their effort.

"But in the closer matches, we just made mistakes and they took advantage of them."

The Cougars started separating themselves at the 145-pound class, with a good string of seniors anchoring the middleweights.

M/W Adam LaDue started the rally with a narrow 4-3 decision over Travis Sims to put the Cougars up 18-16 at the 145-pound slot.

Senior Caleb Lanoue followed up with a pin on Travis Kienitz at 152, while Kellen McArthur downed Jordan Jones with a 10-1 major decision to put Mahnomen/Waubun in firm control 28-16.

A pair of seniors squared off in the 171 class, where Cougar William Hunt defeated Alex Feldt 5-2 to extend the lead to 31-16.

Ben Gailfus halted the M/W rally with a pin on Marlin Farley at 189, before Preston Zornes downed DL senior Justin Holm 7-4 to end the match, with the Lakers having an open heavyweight.

"You have to compliment (M/W), they have a very nice team," Ullyott said.

The match against Staples-Motley Tuesday was an important one for the Mid-State Conference and sectional rankings.

The Cardinals came out early, picking up an important win at 103, as Blake Miller won by a 9-2 decision over Foltz.

"(Staples-Motley) came out using their cradles again, they've gotten away from that the last few years, but are back it," Ullyott said. "But they wrestle using a very physical style and they just wrestled us more physical."

Tony Sims suffered a knee injury in the 130-pound match and had to default his bout to Sam Duberowski because of it.

The Cardinals also won the final three bouts to seal the match.

"We were on the defensive and on our heels for most of the night," Ullyott said. "We need to improve being more physical."

The Lakers downed Crosby-Ironton 66-14, using seven forfeits by the Rangers.

The Lakers (2-1) will travel to Morris Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. start.
