Having not one, but two, individual breakout games was more than enough for the Detroit Lakes boys' basketball team to record their first win of the season Tuesday inside Ralph Anderson Gym.

Add in a smothering 2-2-1 full-court press which generated 19 turnovers by halftime -- along with Josh Stalberger's 20 points and Joe Mollberg's 16 -- and the Lakers routed Mid-State Conference foe Pequot Lakes 76-62.

"We started out with our press, which forced a lot of turnovers and by halftime, they didn't know what hit them," said DL head coach Robb Flint. "We also were stronger with the ball and better with our ball faking and only had four turnovers by half."

The Lakers (1-3) built their biggest lead of the season by halftime with a 40-21 edge.

The pressure DL applied forced turnovers, which in return resulted in high-percentage buckets.

The Patriots, who like to run a slower-pace game with their size, were forced to go smaller to keep up with the quicker and faster Lakers.

But the Lakers' perimeter game kept Pequot Lakes off balance, as guards Tyler Fode netted 10 points and Connor McLeod seven.

Point guard Connor Hedstrom also had five assists and four steals.

"Both Connor McLeod and Connor Hedstrom caused havoc with our press with their quickness," Flint said.

When DL wasn't draining their perimeter shots, they were going inside to Stalberger, who despite suffering from a dislocated shoulder, went for 20 points.

Mollberg also had a season-high double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Alex Guetter just missed a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Lakers also controlled the boards and limited the Patriots to one-shot possessions with a total of 44 rebounds.

The Patriots did show some fortitude by slicing into DL's lead in the second half, at one point shaving it down to four points.

But the Lakers reestablished their inside game and bolted back out ahead.

"We got a little lackadaisical there in the second half," Flint said. "But this game gave us some confidence and showed the guys what they can do when they can play well."

The Lakers will host Frazee Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. start.
