Tweeton runner-up, Feldt third in Big Bear Tourney

The Detroit Lakes wrestling team will be healing and recovering during the upcoming holiday break, after the Lakers suffered several injuries the last couple of weeks.

The incurring injuries were apparent for the Lakers in the Big Bear Tournament in Walker Friday and Saturday, where they had three weights open, but still were able to finish 12th out of 32 teams.

"We could have finished in the top six or seven if we didn't have those weights open," said DL head coach Rob Ullyott. "But overall, I was happy with the kids' efforts."

Justin Tweeton had a good showing, wrestling his way to the finals in the 135-pound weight division before losing to Crookston's Javie Portillo 13-5.

Senior Alex Feldt also wrestled well, finishing third in the 171 class, while Gabe Foltz finished sixth at 103 and Mike Bellefeuille was fifth at 119.

"Justin wrestled a lot more aggressive and offensively, he was going after guys," Ullyott said. "He is taking another step in progressing and the Big Bear Tournament was a nice step for him."

For Feldt, he is also improving from a junior season where he qualified for the Class 2A state meet, and is off to a strong start to his senior year.

Feldt had to wrestle through a deep bracket, suffering his first loss to Hutchinson's Mike Schlueter in the quarterfinals 9-5.

But Feldt survived through two overtime bouts to go 6-1 in the tournament and earn a bronze medal.

"Alex is improving, no doubt," Ullyott said. "He just keeps coming at you aggressively."

Foltz finished sixth at 103 with a 3-3 record, while Bellefeuille was 6-2 at 119.

The Lakers are 3-2 in duels after beating Morris Area 40-20 Dec. 15.

DL concluded its 2009 portion of the schedule with a duel in Crookston Tuesday; the results will be in Sunday's Becker County Record.
