Flyers participate in Hamiline Tourney, send six to state meet

FLYERS Gymnasts Cora Okeson and Leah Chavez participated in the USAG State Meet.

ST. PAUL -- The Minnesota Flyers Gymnastics Level 7 and Level 8 teams competed in the Hamline Holiday Spirit Invitational at Hamline University in St. Paul on Saturday, Dec. 19.

Competing in Level 7 were Peyton Jernberg, Justine Lawrence, and Molly Lyngaas. Competing in Level 8 were Thia Olds, Maddie Rue, and Ilse Rue.

The Level 7 gymnasts took third place in the team competition and the Level 8 team took second place.

All the MFG Level 7 gymnasts finished top 10 out of all the age categories in the all around.

Peyton Jernberg finished with a second place in the all around with a 35.800, which qualifies her for the state championships. A 35.00 is the qualifying mark for the Level 7.

Jernberg also took second place in the floor exercise with a 9.100, and fourth on the beam with a 9.275. Rounding out her marks were an 8.150 on bars and a 9.275 on vault.

Molly Lyngaas finished fifth in the all-around, and Justine Lawrence finished tied for the seventh spot. (Lyngaas also took fifth place in the bars with an 8.250.)

Both Lawrence and Lyngaas reached the qualifying mark at their last meet in Fargo on Nov. 11.

For the Level 8 team, Thia Olds finished with an all-around score of 34.300 (eighth place), which qualifies her for the state championships. The state qualifying mark is 33.5 for Level 8. Her highest individual mark was a third-place showing on the bars with a score of 8.800.

Maddie and Ilse Rue showed great improvement at the meet as well.

MFG individual stats

Jernberg: 9.275 vault (6T), 8.150 bars (6th), 9.275 beam (4th), 9.100 floor (2nd), 35.800 all around (2nd).

Lyngaas: 9.100 vault (8T), 8.250 bars (5th), 8.550 beam (7th), 8.550 floor (12th), 34.450 all around (5th).

Lawrence: 9.100 vault (8T), 7.800 bars (8T), 8.475 beam (9th), 8.850 floor (9th), 34.225 all around (7T).

Olds: 8.000 vault (14th), 8.800 bars (3rd), 9.300 beam (4th), 8.200 floor (12T), 34.300 all around (8th).

M. Rue: 8.250 vault (10T), 7.400 bars (11th), 8.575 beam (9th), 8.200 floor (12T), 32.425 all around (11th).

I. Rue: 8.050 vault (13th), 3.850 bars (16th), 7.200 beam (16T), 6.750 floor (16T), 25.850 all around (17th).

Flyers send six gymnasts to state USAG Meet

Six qualifying Level 5-6 gymnasts from the Minnesota Flyers Gymnastics team competed in the 2009 Minnesota USAG State Compulsory Meet, Dec. 12-13 at Hamline University in St. Paul.

Taking part in the Level 5 competition were Leah Chavez and Cora Okeson. The Level 6 competitors included Natalie Nelmark, Emma Disse, Johanna Jernberg and Morgan Eiter.

In the Level 5 meet, where no age divisions were specified, Chavez scored an 8.550 on vault, 8.350 on bars, 8.050 on beam and 8.225 on floor for an all-around score of 33.175.

Less than a point behind her in the all-around scoring was Okeson with a 32.925. That score included an 8.350 on vault, 7,475 on bars, 8.500 on beam and 8.600 on floor.

In the Level 6 meet, Nelmark competed in the age 8-9 category, scoring an 8.925 on vault, 7.950 on bars, 8.700 on beam and 7.950 on floor for an all-around mark of 33.525.

In the age 10 division, Disse received marks of 8.175 on floor, 6.900 on bars, 8.500 on beam and 8.275 on floor for an all-around score of 31.850.

Jernberg competed in the age 11 division, earning an 8.650 on vault, 7.050 on bars, 8.675 on beam and 8.425 on floor for an all-around score of 32.800.

Rounding out the Level 6 competitors was Eiter in the age 12 junior division. She earned scores of 8.850 on vault, 6.850 on bars, 8.675 on beam and 9.325 on floor -- the team's highest score of the day, good for third place -- and an all-around mark of 33.700.

"It was a great meet for the girls to experience," said Flyers head coach Sith Hansana. "Making it to the state meet is a great accomplishment in itself. Not a lot of Level 5-6 gymnasts qualify for the state meet.

"The highlight of the meet was Morgan Eiter taking third place in the floor exercise event with a 9.325."
