Girl cagers start slow in holiday tourney

It was a disappointing start for the Laker girls' basketball team in this week's holiday tournament at Sartell, as they lost their opener against Princeton 57-35 Tuesday night.

"Princeton came out with high energy, and we were unable to match the speed of the game they played," said DL head coach Mike Hoganson.

After a slow start, the Lakers trailed by 15 points at halftime, but battled back in the second half to close the gap to 10 points before Princeton surged back to put the game well out of reach.

"Princeton is a very good team," said Hoganson. "They're ranked in the state for a reason."

Jenny Matter led the Lakers on the scoreboard with 16, while Kayli Muckenhirn and Courtney Gray each contributed six.

Rounding out the scoring for the Lakers were Jalen Even with four points and Courtney Hedstrom with three.

The Lakers finished out tournament play Wednesday night with a game against Annandale; full results in Wednesday's Detroit Lakes Tribune.
