Detroit Lakes wrestlers open 2010 season in Perham

It was time to get back into the swing of things as the Detroit Lakes wrestling team finished fifth out of eight teams at the Perham Invitational Saturday, in the Lakers' first action of 2010.

It was a good meet to shake off the rust, as 10 of 12 DL wrestlers placed in the top six, highlighted by 119-pounder Mike Bellefeuille's division title.

"I was OK with the performance, everyone wrestled well," said DL head coach Rob Ullyott. "We are still a little dinged up with two open weights and having two junior varsity wrestlers fill a couple."

The 119-pound championship was Bellefeuille's first of his varsity career, which was forged out of some hard work in the practice room, Ullyott said.

"Mike just continues to get better every day and he is seeing the results," the DL coach said.

Bellefeuille downed New London-Spicer's Logan Brink in the title bout on a 4-2 decision.

Bellefeuille defeated Josh Bermu of New York Mills by fall in the semifinals, after downing Sauk Centre's Derek Karasch on a pin in the opening round.

Senior Alex Feldt fell one win short of a championship, after he lost to NL-S's John Nethring in the title bout 12-6.

Nethring also defeated Feldt last year in the Class 2A individual state meet.

"Alex had a good meet and it's good he saw some good competition," Ullyott said.

"He will learn from it. If there ever was such a thing as a good loss, this was it."

DL also had a pair of third-place finishers in Tony Sims at 130, Garrett Foltz at 140 and Gabe Foltz at 103.

Gabe Foltz lost his first-round match to Sauk Centre's Josh Meyer, but ended up defeating Meyer later in the wrestleback for third place.

The Lakers will host a triangular Thursday, with Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton facing Moorhead at 5 p.m. and the Lakers wrestling D-G-F at 6 p.m. and the Spuds at 8 p.m.
