Lady Hornets lose ground in conference

The Frazee Lady Hornets struggled against Heart O'Lakes Conference leaders Hawley and Perham over their latest two-game stretch.

The Lady Hornets came up short Monday evening in the battle of the bees, losing to Perham 80-31 at Prairie Wind Gymnasium in Perham.

"Perham really took it to us tonight," head coach Dave Conzemius said. "They came out ready from the get-go and were the more aggressive team all night."

Freshman Alexis Tappe led the Lady Hornets (2-11 overall, 1-8 HOL) with 14 points off of the bench.

Freshmen Ashley Bachmann added seven.

Perham (10-1, 8-1 HOL) was led by senior Elisa Moenkedick, who became the Yellowjackets. all-time leading scorer in the first half, with 24 points overall.

Katrina Moenkedick had 16 and Lauren Guck had 11 points.

The No. 8 ranked Nuggets were too much for Frazee, downing the Green 61-28.

Hawley held the Lady Hornets scoreless for the first 12 minutes en route to the big victory at Frazee on Friday, Jan.8.

"Hawley showed us that they are the real deal," Conzemius said.

"They shot the ball exceptionally well and really made us work for our points. It's not that we played that poorly, they just executed at such a high level that we haven't seen this year."

The Lady Hornets had no answer for the Nuggets (10-0, 8-0) as they used a combination of strong inside and outside play to blister the nets, shooting 56 percent for the game.

In contrast, Frazee shot 20 percent (9-for-45).

Nine Hawley girls scored, led by sophomore Jessy Noreen with 19 points. Junior Allie Sannes added 12 points and senior Amy Stoa tallied 11.

Tappe led the Lady Hornets with 13 points and four steals.

"It was encouraging to see that we took care of the ball against their pressure defense," Conzemius said.

"We are becoming much better with our ball-handling and I don't think we will have many games that we will shoot the ball that poorly."

Frazee is back in action on Thursday night when they host Breckenridge.

The game is also Parents' Night.
