Not only do the Detroit Lakes and Perham gymnastics teams reside as the top two ranked squads in Class 1A, they now have proven it outright by taking the top two spots at the State True Team meet Saturday in Becker.

The two Section 8-1A and Mid-State Conference teams easily outpaced the rest of the Class 1A field, as the Yellowjackets earned 186 points and DL 181.

Becker was third with a mark of 176.

The True Team meet scores all five gymnasts' scores, not the top four, like in regular meets.

It was also the second year in a row Perham and DL finished one-two.

"The girls were happy with second," said DL head coach Jen Whipple. "Even though we had a bad start on floor, the girls turned it around in the three other events and performed well."

Natalie Hoffert had a solid meet, scoring a 9.15 or above in all four events, including a 9.45 on floor and 9.4 on vault.

The Lakers dominated the vault event, as Jessica Stelter landed a 9.7, Amy Crawford a 9.575 and Bre Halbur a 9.525.

There was also improvement on beam, the event the Lakers will need to get better on if they are to catch Perham.

Crawford earned a 9.225 and Hoffert a 9.15, while the bars went well, with Crawford hitting a nice 9.75 routine.

"Perham is always clean on beam, so we know we need to get better on it," Whipple said. "But the girls also had strong bars and vault events."

The Lakers have two more meets before the section meet, which is in Perham on Saturday, Feb. 20.

DL will be at the Mid-State Conference meet in Park Rapids Saturday, starting at noon.

They will visit Park Rapids again for a dual meet Tuesday to wrap up the regular season.

"The girls are just looking for more consistency," Whipple added about the rest of the season.
