Lakers finish 6th in Detroit Lakes Dual Tourney; sweep through Alexandria quadrangular

The cream of Section 8-1A maybe rising to the top, after Fergus Falls finished as the Detroit Lakes Invite runner-up Saturday inside Ralph Anderson Gym.

The Otters disposed of the Lakers in round one 46-13, while wrestling their way to the title bout against Dassel-Cokato, where DC's heavyweight Sam Pokornowski beat Harvey McMahon in overtime to tilt the championship for a 33-28 win over Fergus Falls.

"Fergus Falls has a really nice team and one without many holes," said DL head coach Rob Ullyott. "We just don't match up well with them."

For the Lakers, the team is still feeling their way to finalize a lineup after incurring several key injuries -- including a season-ending knee injury to senior heavyweight Justin Holm.

"Justin was our guy down there, so now we are pretty inexperienced and are just being careful how we approach things at 215 and heavyweight," Ullyott said.

The Lakers rebounded in round two with a 33-16 win over Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus, after winning the first five matches to set the tone.

DL finished sixth after losing to Thief River Falls in the fifth-place match by the score of 44-24.

Mike Bellefeuille had a 10-2 loss to Sam Twistol at 119 in what appeared to be the No. 1 seed match for the section meet.

The score was tied 2-2 heading into the third period, but Twistol was able to score several takedowns and back points to separate the two wrestlers.

"Mike just needs to do a better job in the third period," Ullyott said. "He is a very capable wrestler against the Thief River Falls kid."

DL made a bit of a rally with wins from 160 through 189, as Alex Feldt toppled Cody Bannet 6-0 to start things out.

Ben Gailfus was a 7-1 winner over Craig Williams and Bryce Dutton had a 6-0 win over Travis Dagget at 189.

But DL had to forfeit the 215 and heavyweight matches to hand the win to the Prowlers.

Gabe Foltz went 1-2 at 103 pounds, but had a solid day.

"Gabe is in a situation where he is outsized against the bigger 103 pounders," Ullyott said. "He is definitely a wrestler who works hard and has good technique, he just needs to get bigger.

"Overall, we got beat by Fergus Falls, who was a better team, and Thief River Falls, who just outworked us."

The Lakers went 3-0 in the Alexandria quadrangular Thursday, topping Bertha-Hewitt 39-27, Bemidji 37-28 and Alexandria 52-24.

"It was good to see Zach Baker win at 112 and Brandon Dahring, who went 3-0," Ullyott said. "Bryce Dutton was 2-1, and he has improved an awful a lot since the start of this season.

"It was a great quad for us, against teams we don't get to see very much."

The Lakers will host Thief River Falls and Fosston Thursday in triangular action.

TRF and Fosston will face off at 5 p.m. and DL versus Fosston at 6:30 p.m.

The Prowlers will wrestle DL in the nightcap.
