DL hangs with Pequot Lakes, before falling 64-51

Laker guard Jalen Even attempts to drive the lane against Moorhead. DL dropped a Mid-State tilt in Pequot Lakes Saturday.

A good first half by the Detroit Lakes girls' basketball team wasn't enough in Pequot Lakes, as the Patriots outscored the Lakers by a 33-21 margin in the second half to pull out the 64-51 win.

Junior center Jen Matter and sophomore post Courtney Gray each had good games inside with 16 and 12 points, respectively, but Pequot Lakes used a run in the first eight minutes of the second half to widen a 31-30 halftime lead.

"They were able to build a 10-point lead and that was too much to overcome in the end," said DL head coach Mike Hoganson.

Senior guard Ashlyn Jasken complimented Gray and Matter well by netting nine points from the perimeter, as well.

"The girls really played a super first half," Hoganson said. "We handled their defensive pressure well and were able to get the ball inside to our posts (Matter and Gray) consistently."

Pequot Lakes (16-5) also had a significant advantage from the free throw line, going 17-24 to DL's 3-6.

The Patriots were led by Emily Lueck with 22 points and Kylie Beltz with 17.

The Lakers (4-14) will host Mid-State foe Wadena-Deer Creek (4-13) Friday at 7:30 p.m.
