Frazee almost pulls off upset

It was nearly the upset of the season, as the Frazee Lady Hornets battled toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in Minnesota Class 2A girl's basketball Tuesday night in Hawley.

Frazee hung around all game long and had a chance to pull the upset, until the Nuggets scored the last six points of the game to earn a hard fought 43-33 victory over the game Lady Hornets.

"This was a great game for our kids as they saw that when we execute our game plan, we can play with anybody," head coach Dave Conzemius said. "They really took it to us the first time we played and tonight we showed them, that we are a much better team."

The two teams met back on Jan.8 in Frazee, with Hawley racing to an early double-digit lead en route to a 61-28 victory.

Tuesday night Frazee (6-16 overall, 4-12 Heart O'Lakes Conference) matched Hawley (20-0 overall, 15-0 HOL) right out of the gates, as the two teams exchanged baskets in the first half.

The Lady Hornets rode the hot-hand of freshman Alexis Tappe, who scored the first 11 points for Frazee.

"Alexis was big for us tonight, as she hit some shots to give us some confidence early on," Conzemius said.

Junior Kristi Smith hit a deep 3-pointer right before halftime for Frazee, as Hawley took an 18-16 lead to the locker room.

The second half was a carbon copy of the first half, as the two teams exchanged baskets until the five-minute mark.

The Nuggets took advantage of a few Lady Hornet turnovers to push their lead to 10 points at 35-25.

Just when it looked like Hawley would put the game away, Tappe responded with five quick points to help Frazee cut into the lead.

The Lady Hornets still trailed by four points with 1:30 left in the game, only to see Hawley take care of the ball and convert their free throws down the stretch to pull out the win.

Tappe was the only player in double figures for Frazee, scoring a career-high and game-high 21 points.

The Nuggets were led by junior Allie Sannes with 16 points.
