Lakers explode in 2nd period to thrash Storm

It took a while, but the Detroit Lakes boys' hockey team buried Morris/Benson Friday by a score of 8-2, which also ended a two-game Section 6-1A skid.

A five-goal second period more than separated the Lakers (15-7-2) from the Storm (9-12) for a 6-1 lead.

DL forward Andy Schupp poked in the only first-period goal, even though the Lakers put up 13 shots in that time span.

After MBA tied the game 16 seconds into the second on a Tyler Hansen tally, the Lakers finally started to outwork the Storm, scoring the next five goals.

Chad Maristuen put in the first one off a Ryan Berg pass.

Shortly after, Nate Ginnaty scored, followed by an Alex Phelps score.

On the power play, Phelps netted his second of the night off a pass from linemate Tanner Lane.

Brett Provo finished off the period with a nice top shelf goal to put DL up comfortably, 6-1.

In the third, the Lakers were on cruise control, and still outscored the home team Storm 2-1.

Lane put in his first goal of the night -- and 49th of the season -- while Nate Baker closed out the scoring to give the Lakers the victory.

Goalie Andrew Friesen made 17 stops in the game.

The Lakers close out the regular season Tuesday in Bemidji (12-11).
