Frazee wrestling rolls to state berth

Winning by a combined 164-40, the No. 1 ranked Frazee wrestling team breezed through the Section 8-1A team tournament to qualify for their fifth consecutive state meet.

The Hornets simply overpowered their three section opponents, topping Crookston 39-19 in the title round, while lambasting Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 57-9 in the semifinals and United North Central 68-12 in the opening dual.

Just how dominating were the Hornets?

Out of the possible 42 matches in their three duals, Frazee lost just 10 matches -- total.

It's just another step in Frazee's ultimate goal of winning their fourth state championship during a season where the Hornets have almost been untouchable on the mat.

Frazee ended the season ranked No. 1 in Class 1A in the Guillotine's standings, while having a combined five ranked in the top 10 of their respected weights.

Those Hornets who are ranked in the state in their weight divisions include junior Trevor Stilke (fifth, 103 pounds), junior Tanner Ellenberg (seventh, 119), sophomore Rij Koehnen (fifth, 135), junior Casey Nunn (ninth, 145) and junior Cody Lafraniere-Sorenson (fourth, 189).

The Section 8-1A individual meet is Friday and Saturday.

The Hornets (15-0) netted the No. 2 seed in the Class 1A state meet and will face Mille Lacs (20-7) in the opening round Thursday, March 4, inside the Xcel Energy Center starting at 9:30 a.m.

The winner will face the victor between No. 3 Zumbrota-Mazeppa (27-6) and Paynesville (17-8) Friday, March 5, at noon.

The No. 1 seed is Minneota (17-5) and No. 4 is Jackson County Central (16-4).

The Class 1A championship match is Saturday, March 6, at 6:30 p.m.
