Laker boy cagers blow out Crookston

A quick burial was had for the Crookston boys' basketball team, as the visiting Detroit Lakes squad dug the Pirates a deep hole in the form of a 41-19 halftime deficit.

The end result was a 78-49 victory for the Lakers (11-13), who were led by junior forward Josh Stalberger's 22 points -- 16 of them coming in the first half route.

"We jumped on them early," said DL head coach Robb Flint. "The guys did a good job rebounding and forced them into jump shots with our defense."

The Lakers gained a spark on a Tyler Fode steal, who found a wide open Stalberger in the open court, with the DL forward slamming down a dunk in the first four minutes of the contest.

The defense caused some turnovers for the Lakers, along with a strong defensive rebounding game, which led to some easy transition buckets to increase their lead.

With Stalberger garnering heavy attention in the paint, the perimeter had plenty of open shooting lanes, in which DL converted.

Fode finished with 11 points, while senior guard Mark Labat added 10.

Senior post Alex Guetter also enjoyed some success down low by contributing 10 points.

The Lakers also had 24 assists as a team, while sophomore guard Rick Hutchinson led DL in rebounding with 10. Stalberger added nine boards, to just miss another double-double.

The Lakers finish out their final two games at home, against the Class 2A's No. 10 ranked Staples-Motley (17-5) Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. and Thief River Falls (12-9) Friday, March 5.
