Cards bomb 3's to down DL

Three pointers were raining from the Ralph Anderson Gymnasium Tuesday, as the Staples-Motley boys' basketball team poured in 16 of them in an 87-56 victory over the Lakers.

The Cardinals registered more three pointers than two-point field goals -- 15.

S-M's guard Derek Wolhowe had his long-range shooting down, nailing six three's while converting five field goals, to key his game-high 31 points.

Cardinal guard Jordan Riewer garnered plenty of attention, of which he took advantage by getting the ball to open teammates.

But the wonder guard still managed to dump in 19 points, including five three's.

"Their point guard (Riewer) is pretty good," said DL head coach Robb Flint. "We put Josh (Stalberger) on him to help contain him, but it didn't help, because the other defenders were leaving their shooters.

"We didn't do a good job executing the game plan."

The Cardinals (20-5) started hitting their shots early, which enabled them to build a 45-31 halftime lead.

The second half was a flood of three's for S-M, which piled on 42 more points, while the Lakers were forced into playing catch up the entire second half.

"When you get down by 30 or more, you start hoisting up three's to try and comeback," Flint said. "That doesn't work well."

Sophomore guard Joe Mollberg led DL in scoring with 14 points, while Stalberger had 12 and Brian Labat finished with eight.

The Lakers (11-14) will close out the regular season at home against Thief River Falls Friday.

DL will be locked in to either the No. 5 or 6 seed in the upcoming Section 8-3A playoffs, which start Tuesday, March 9.

With the win, Staples-Motley has clinched at least a share of the Mid-State Conference championship.
