A pair of young guns finished first and second in the Lotvola Cup Saturday at Maplelag.

High school state qualifiers, sophomore Jake Richards and junior Dylan Ramstad-Skoyles finished with the gold and silver, respectively, as the former beat the latter by five seconds.

Richards' time of 51:06 nipped out Ramstad-Skoyles' mark of 51:11 for the win.

"Jake and Dylan each attack the final hill hard, but Jake just was able to hold onto the lead," said Maplelag co-owner Jay Richards, also Jake's father.

The Lotvola Cup attracted over 100 cross-country skiers, with male and female age division placements sought after through the race.

"The trails were soft and a little slow, which made for some tight racing, because the front of the pack couldn't gain any separation," Jay Richards said. "It resulted in some close races."

DL head Nordic ski coach Dan Josephson finished 11th overall and won his 25-34 age division with a time of 51:52, one second ahead of Knut Romenik.

Dr. Bob Koshnick of Detroit Lakes also won his 65 and over division with a sub-hour time of 56:21.

DL state qualifier, eighth grader Berit Ramstad-Skoyles won her 12-14 age division with a time of 59:22, while Johanna Winters took the 25-34 division with a 51:28.
