Hornets will learn on the go

FRAZEE HEAD COACH DAVE TRAUTMAN goes over some strategy with his Hornet softball team last season. Frazee moves down a class, from Section 8-2A to Section 6-1A for the 2010 season.

The Frazee softball team will be greeting their new class and section with plenty of new faces this season.

The Hornets will have several of their core players back from a year ago, but will also be filling many spots with some green and inexperienced players.

"We have some spots which will have experienced players in them, but at the beginning of the year, we'll be pretty green," said Frazee head coach Dave Trautman. "But things will play themselves out by the time playoffs come around."

The Hornets have made the move from Class 2A to Class 1A, where they will play in Section 6-1A.

It's a move which allows Frazee to play schools more their size, but it necessarily doesn't mean it will be an easier journey.

"I think Section 6-1A may have just as, or stronger, pitching as our old section (Section 8-2A)," Trautman said.

The section will carry strong teams such as Hawley, Parkers Prairie and Sebeka -- all with strong and dominant pitchers.

The Hornets' infield will be anchored by junior shortstop Kari Shipman, who was named All-Section last season.

Senior Jaclyn Mickelson will secure the centerfield position, while other veteran presences include juniors Erica Ratz at third base, Sadie Stender and Chloe Streeper in the outfield.

"The catcher position is still open, we have several young players vying for it," Trautman added.

Another unknown commodity will be at pitching, where juniors Emma Buhr and Brittney Blauert will see duty.

"Both are inexperienced, but hopefully they'll develop through the season," Trautman said. "Emma has good control of her pitches and can move the ball around the plate and Brittney can change speeds well.

"Location will be important (for both) this season."

Freshmen Alexis Tappe and Ashley Bachmann will also see action on the mound.

With Shipman and Mickelson each posting batting averages of .400-plus last season, Trautman will try and surround them with batters who can get on base.

The Hornets will open their 2010 season at Lake Park-Audubon Tuesday, April 13, at 4:30 p.m.
