The Lakes Area Boxing and White Earth Nation clubs each won Region 4 championships Saturday inside the Wadena Armory.

LAB's Shane Kern earned the 165-pound Golden Gloves Region 4 title with a pair of decisions, while White Earth Nation's Glen Sommers won the heavyweight championship.

Kern made his way to the title bout with a decision over St. Cloud's Jon Guyer, after the LAB boxer knocked Guyer down in the first round.

Saturday, Kern faced Travis Petro of Wadena in the finals, taking the bout by decision.

Kern was also named Region 4's "Best Boxer".

"Shane earned everything he got this weekend," said LAB trainer Chris Holt. "He trained hard and he wanted the win. He didn't hold anything back."

Sommers earned a decision over St. Cloud's John LaPlant in the semifinals, then earned gold with a win by decision over Trent Petro of Wadena in the finals.

"Glen came up strong in the second and third rounds to win the match," Holt added.

"Casey was down on the scorecards after two rounds and came back strong in the third," Chris Holt said.

Letesha Anderson of LAB lost to Kira Ollila of Wadena by referee stopping the fight.

Kern and Sommers will advance to the Upper Midwest Championships in Walker at Northern Lights Casino April 9-10.
