Lakers win close matches to take dual over Crookston

A close, even match was won by the Detroit Lakes boys' tennis team Tuesday, as the Lakers pulled out several close duals to claim a 5-2 win over visiting Crookston.

There were two three-set matches, with DL splitting them, while taking 3-of-4 in singles action.

"The entire team played well, as it was a closely contested match that could have gone either way," said DL head coach Wade Johnson. "These two teams are very evenly matched, and every match was big and each win was huge in this one."

Isaac Fondrick was victorious over Noah Fagerlund, as the DL freshman won a pivotal first set 7-6 (7-2).

He finished off his Pirate opponent with a more convincing 6-2 second-set win.

The No. 3 doubles team of Garret Duncan and Derick Brehm won a three-set challenge by Matt Gregg and Travis Vathauer, as the DL duo took the third and decisive set 6-3.

They won set one 6-3, but the Crookston pair downed Duncan and Brehm in the second, 6-2.

Although it went only two sets, the Lakers' top doubles team of Chad Hanson and Jake Hartman out-lasted Crookston's Fabian Klein and Wade Johnston 6-3, 6-2.

"Hanson and Hartman came through big in a very intense doubles match against an outstanding team," Johnson added.

Tanner Duncan won his No. 2 singles match over Nick Biermaier 6-4, 6-2, while Jesse Meyer downed Cody Generoux for a No. 4 singles win 6-0, 6-4.

The Lakers will host a triangular Friday at 1 p.m., with Alexandria and Thief River Falls coming to town.
