DL girl linksters win first meet

Even though most of the Detroit Lakes girls' golf team's roster reads like a junior high lineup, the Lakers are playing with the big dogs -- and beating them.

The Lakers won their first meet of the season Monday after shooting a 349 in the Park Rapids meet at Headwaters Golf Course.

The team's season-low of 349 was keyed by three scores of 90 or less, as eighth grader Trisa Hutchinson shot a team-low 82, followed by fellow eighth grader Matty Tschider's 85.

The two finished second and third, respectively, in the meet.

Sophomore Courtney Hedstrom fired an even 90, while Natalie Roth shot a season-low 92 to round out DL's top four scores.

"We are a young team, but these girls are showing lots of improvement," said DL coach Cali Harrier, who has taken over head coaching duties for Jen Hendrickson, who recently delivered her first child. "They are driving the ball well and down the middle, too."

The Lakers took the right steps to improvement in their last three meets, after shooting a 383 Friday in Bemidji for fourth and a 372 in Grand Rapids for third.

"From Friday through Monday, their putting has improved a lot," Harrier added. "Going from fourth to third to first also helps the girls' confidence."

Roth's 92 is also an encouraging sign.

"Having Natalie shooting in the low 90's is important because she has been our No. 4 golfer," Harrier said.

Rounding out DL's card Monday was Sydney Busker's 99 and Ashley Freisen's 107.

The weather was not its usual sun-shiny kind of Friday and Saturday, as the Lakers played under rainy and blustery conditions.

Tschider finished fifth overall Saturday in Grand Rapids with an 85, as Mikki Kromy of Grand Rapids won medalist honors with a 79.

Hutchinson followed with an 89, Roth with a 98, Friesen hit 100 and Thompson a 108.

The Lakers finished with a 383 Friday in Bemidji, as Hedstrom was low player with a 91.

Hutchinson and Roth each carded a 97, while Tschider finished with a 98. Thompson finished with a 108 and Friesen a 112.

The Lakers will play in the Wadena-Deer Creek Invite at Pheasant Run Golf Course Thursday, starting at 3 p.m.

They will then head to Alexandria Saturday for a 9:30 a.m. start at the Geneva Golf Course.
