Lakers down Pirates 9-2

There's a simple formula which is being adhered to by the Detroit Lakes softball team -- good defense equals victories.

That's been the trend for the Lakers, who had just one error on the day in a 9-2 victory over Crookston, to improve to 8-4 overall -- but more importantly, 6-1 in Section 8-2A.

Senior pitcher Callea Butz had another solid outing, allowing five hits, striking out five and limiting her walks to just one.

Add in yet another good day at the plate by the Laker batters in the form of 12 hits, and it all added up to DL's eighth win of the season.

"The defense played wonderful again," said DL head coach Phil Kirchner. "The girls did a nice job swinging the bat and were aggressive early, and Callea kept the ball down and hit the corners.

"It was a great team effort."

The early run production gave Butz a big enough cushion to go out and do her stuff.

The Lakers collected two hits, along with a Crookston error, to ring out a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

A four-run second gave DL a 7-0 lead, which was keyed by the team's RBI leader, senior shortstop Shayna Dugger's (10) two-run double, along with a total of four DL hits in the frame by Cady Cartmell, freshmen Kathryn Kinney and Hannah Ianiro.

Junior Mikalea Martin upped the ante to 8-1 with a leadoff single, and later scored on a passed ball.

DL capped its scoring with a run in the sixth, after Donna Wicker reached on an error and was later hit in by senior Amalea Branden.

Dugger finished 3-4 with two RBIs, while Cartmell, Seebold and Kinney each had two hits.

"Cartmell continues to swing the bat well and the girls are figuring out the bunting and base running aspects of the game," Kirchner included.

The Lakers have a huge Mid-State doubleheader in Park Rapids Friday -- which follows a game in Moorhead Thursday.

The Panthers are 5-1 in the conference and DL is 6-0, while Park Rapids is one game ahead of the Lakers in the section rankings.

"It's a big doubleheader and if we play good defense, good things will happen," the DL coach said.

The Lakers are led by Cartmell and Seebold in batting, each with a .424 average, while Branden has marked a .355 average.

Butz is 8-3 from the hill, with 76 strikeouts in 70 innings pitched, has 33 walks and is registering a 2.83 ERA.
