Laker girl golfers keep up hot pace in gusty Alexandria
The wind played a big factor in Alexandria's golf invite at the Geneva Golf Course Saturday, but the experience was just another one added to the heap for the young Detroit Lakes girls' golf team.
Fighting gusts which could easily take a shot off its intended course, the Lakers had to make adjustments on the fly -- and considering their third-place finish with a team score of 367, it worked out pretty good.
"I thought they played pretty well considering the conditions," said DL coach Cali Harrier. "They made good adjustments in their club selections."
The Lakers had four scores breaking the 100 barrier, with sophomore Courtney Hedstrom shooting a 45-43 for a final score of 88, which was good enough to tie for fifth overall.
Hedstrom has been making strides to improve her game and find more consistency on the course.
"The big thing for Courtney has been her maturity, she has stepped it up and consistently has been breaking 90," Harrier said. "She is more confident and wants to step up as a team leader. But she knows that she is capable of doing better."
Following Hedstrom was eighth grader Trisa Hutchinson with a 46-45 for a final 91.
Eighth grade teammate Matty Tschider shot a 92, while Natalie Roth finished with a 96 for the Lakers.
Rounding out DL's card were sophomore Ashley Friesen's 108 and seventh grader Sydney Busker's 111.
"We now have three girls who can potentially break the 80 mark in any given meet," Harrier said. "And Natalie (Roth) has the ability to break the 90 barrier, too."
With some important meets looming before the Sub-Section meet at Wildflower May 27, now is the time for the golfers to start picking up their games.
The Lakers will be in the Blueberry Pines meet for the Menahga Invite Thursday, while preparing for the Mid-State Conference Meet Tuesday, which will be held at the Detroit Country Club.
Last year, the Lakers finished second to Staples-Motley, and they have exchanged a win and defeat with Pequot Lakes already this season.
DL will then play at Longbow Golf Course -- the location of the Section 8-2A meet -- Friday, May 21, and then head to Wildflower Golf Course for a meet Saturday, May 22 -- which is the site for the Sub-Section event.
DL will cap the regular season with its home invite at the Detroit Country Club Tuesday, May 25.
