Girls golf 2nd at Blueberry Pines

The weather was cold, drizzly and gloomy, but in the end, it couldn't deter the Detroit Lakes girls' golf team from having a solid showing in the Menahga Invite at Blueberry Pines Golf Course Thursday.

Several beginnings for a couple of the Laker players weren't auspicious, but nice recoveries on the back nine allowed DL to finish second only to state-ranked Grand Rapids 329 to 359.

Eighth grader Matty Tschider finished with an 84 for fourth place overall, while Trisa Hutchinson shot an 87, Natalie Roth a 93 and Courtney Hedstrom a 95.

DL's scorecard was rounded out by Emma Thompson's 100, Ashley Friesen's 106 and Sydney Busker's 112.

"It was just pars and bogeys for Matty today," said DL coach Cali Harrier. "She was consistent."

Hedstrom's front nine matched the temperature, as she shot a 52. But the DL sophomore recovered nicely on her back nine to shoot a 43.

"The weather was a factor early on, but I was able to pull out a decent back nine," Hedstrom said. "I just knew I had to pull it together mentally after my first nine holes, and it was a good ending."

The same can be said of Roth's 93.

"I struggled bad early after hitting the water on my first hole," Roth said. "After it stopped raining for a bit, I just told myself 'Get my act together or else I'm going to be in the hundreds.'"

That didn't happen, after a 45-50 foot putt for birdie put her on a streak of pars on the back nine.

"That putt cheered me up," Roth said.

Hutchinson's game was helped by her mental approach, and it ended with a consistent 87.

"I just played like it was sunny and warm," Hutchinson said of her approach. "I had a couple of bad holes, but I was chipping well, which saved me."

Her putting was also solid, with just 32 in her round.

The Lakers are entering the final stretch of the regular season, with the Mid-State Conference meet Tuesday at the Detroit Country Club (they beat three conference teams Thursday in Pequot Lakes, Staples-Motley and Crosby-Ironton).
