DL dominates doubles to key Mid-State title

The Detroit Lakes and Staples-Motley boys' tennis teams each were dominant in either singles or doubles, as the two squads shared the Mid-State Conference championship Friday in Park Rapids.

The Lakers swept doubles play -- winning all their matches -- while the Cardinals won all four singles titles, with both teams finishing with 23 points.

It still was quite an accomplishment for the Lakers, though, who are having a solid season.

"It's a huge win for us," said DL head coach Wade Johnson. "I thought we would have had to play a perfect meet to win it and we played near perfection.

"I was very satisfied."

The most consistent duo for DL this season has been the No. 1 doubles team of CJ Hanson and Jesse Meyer, who went 4-0 on the day.

DL downed their S-M counterparts Derek Wolhowe and Anthony Duhn 7-6 -- with a 7-4 tiebreaker -- and 6-3 in the second set.

"Those two have been our steady eddies this season," Johnson said of his No. 1 doubles duo.

There was a strange mix at No. 2 for DL, as senior Jake Hartman teamed up with seventh grader Alex Fondrick.

It was the right formula, as the two went undefeated, with their closest match coming against S-M's Josh Solway and Shane Suess.

Hartman and Fondrick lost the first set on a 7-1 tiebreaker, then proceeded to take sets two and three 6-2 and 7-5.

"Having a senior and seventh grader duo and do what they did is a big deal," Johnson included.

The No. 3 duo of junior Derrick Brehm and Garret Duncan made the doubles sweep final, as they cruised to a 4-0 record with all straight set victories.

In singles, DL had three players go 3-1 and take second place finishes in freshman Isaac Fondrick at No. 2, senior Tanner Duncan at No. 3 and junior Levi Nordine at No. 4.

Senior Thieris Galdino finished 2-2 and in third at No. 1 singles.

"Isaac Fondrick had an outstanding day," Johnson stated.

The Lakers ran out of gas, though, Saturday in their home triangular against the section's top team Thief River Falls and Fergus Falls.

The Prowlers blanked DL 7-0, while the Otters won handily 6-1.

"We started out well, but the guys just hit a wall a little later," Johnson said. "They were mentally drained after Friday's Mid-State meet."

The Lakers will prepare for the Section 8-1A meet, which starts Tuesday, May 25, and runs through Thursday, May 27.
