Ginnaty highlights DL's home tourney

Detroit Lakes senior Nate Ginnaty's play the last few meets has bolstered an already deep Laker lineup and his 146 score during the Northwest Classic at the Detroit Country Club strengthen his place on the team.

Ginnaty was DL's bright spot in the two-day tournament after he shot a three-over par 74 Friday and a one-over 72 Saturday to finish fifth overall.

"Nate really stepped it up and showed he can play on a high level," said DL head coach Bob Gorden. "Overall, as a team, we played well, not great. I think the guys were thinking they could shoot low just because they were on their home course.

"It doesn't work that way."

The Lakers first team finished sixth overall with a 303-316-619, as Forest Lake won the team title with a 589, after shooting below 300 both days with a 291 and 298.

DL played to a 303 Friday, but didn't shoot as well Saturday with a 316.

"I was hoping for a sub-300 Saturday, so we shot a little higher than I expected," Gorden said. "The guys just had some mistakes on their own home course."

Michael Herzog shot a solid three-over par 74 Friday, but fired a 79 the second day for a final 153, while Connor Hedstrom was one stroke behind him for DL's first team.

Austin Rusness carded a two-day 155 and was followed by Tanner Lane's 158, Tyler Baukol's 159 and Karter Smith's 161.

The Lakers second team finished with a 316-318 for a final 634 to place ninth out of 12 teams.

They were led by Ginnaty's 146, while Ross Mickelson fired a 159.

Other second team scores included Rick Hutchinson's 163, Andy Schupp's 166, Nate Bausman's 175 and Joe Hanson's 177.

Taking medalist honors were Max Kelly of Forest Lake and Anoka's Devin Holmes, who each shot one-under par 70 and two-over 73 the second day for a 143.

The Lakers will be playing the Section 8-2A course at Longbow in Walker Friday and the Sub-Section site Saturday at Wildflower.
