Smith fires one-under par 70 to win medalist laurels; DL wins 17th in a row

RICK HUTCHINSON of the Laker boys' golf team hits off the fairway Saturday during the Northwest Classic at the Detroit Country Club.

The last time the Detroit Lakes boys' golf team wasn't Mid-State Conference champions -- Bill Clinton was president, the Howard Stern radio show started its first broadcast and the Florida Marlins played their first-ever season.

The Lakers' Mid-State Conference championship streak reached 17 in a row after DL shot a meet-low 295 Tuesday at the Detroit Country Club, while freshman Karter Smith earned medalist laurels with a one-under par 70.

Smith rebounded nicely after a rough Northwest Classic Tournament Friday and Saturday. He shot an 80-81-161 in the two-day tourney, which was also held at the DCC.

"I think I was just putting too much pressure on myself (last weekend)," Smith said. "I just came out and had more fun today."

Smith shot majority par golf, while adding in birdies on holes one, 12 and 17.

"I had a lot of nice iron shots," Smith said. "I had some trouble at the end of my round, but was able to make pars for the most part."

The Lakers also welcomed the return of junior Tanner Lane, who is coming back after tearing three ligaments in his shoulder during the DL boys' hockey playoffs.

Lane shot a season-low two-over par 73 Tuesday, which was good for third overall.

"I had a bit of a slow start and missed some short birdie putts, but I had a two-putt birdie on nine and made birdie on six and seven," Lane said of his Mid-State meet. "I was hitting my irons well, which helped me turn it around."

Lane's rehab was about three months, where he could only work on his short game with his irons and putting.

It made a difference.

"I was working on putting with a sling on and I am already more consistent in my putting and chipping," Lane said. "I took it slow with my driving, but now I'm back at 100 percent."

Connor Hedstrom and Nate Ginnaty each finished tied for fifth with a 76, while Austin Rusness won on a playoff hole to earn All-Conference honors in seventh with a 78.

Michael Herzog rounded out DL's card with an 82.

The Lakers will play at Longbow Golf Course in Walker Friday and Wildflower Saturday -- the sites of the Section 8-2A and Sub-Section meets, respectively.
