Laker football voted into the Heart O'Lakes Conference

Once again, the Detroit Lakes football team will have a place to hang their hat.

The Heart O'Lakes Conference voted to accept Detroit Lakes' application to join the conference, starting in the 2011 season.

The last official step to take is for the DL school board to accept the invite by the HOL Conference.

The Lakers became conference-less this year after the folding of the North Country Conference, in which DL has been playing in the last five years.

But with the closure of Duluth East High School and the departure of Thief River Falls, the conference folded.

DL has 2010 lengthy road games scheduled in Bismarck, Duluth and Grand Forks, as well against Fargo Davies.

The travel time is cut considerably starting in 2011, though.

The Lakers will join the big-school division of the HOL, which includes Crookston, East Grand Forks, Thief River Falls, Perham, Staples-Motley, Park Rapids and Pequot Lakes.

DL activity director Mitch McLeod said the Lakers will have seven conference games scheduled annually, with the first game of the season open and to be filled with a non-conference foe.

The Lakers will still be in the same Section 8-4A, but will play the regular season against HOL teams, which are mostly made up of Class 3A programs.
