Not only has the Lakes Area Screaming Eagle semi-pro football team put together five straight victories, they have done it in deciding fashion.

The latest to fall victim to the Eagles' dominating roll were the visiting Brainerd Lumberjacks, who fell to Lakes Area 42-6 Saturday underneath the Frazee High School football field lights.

Screaming Eagles quarterback Jason McCloskey threw for 364 yards after hitting 63 percent of his passes (23-36), while serving up three touchdowns and two interceptions.

"We were hitting our short passes and our long passes," McCloskey said. "They were playing a cover-one press defense with two safeties over the top to try and stop our deep game, and I was able to read it and hit our short passes."

McCloskey connected with receiver Tarel Flanigan of New York Mills twice, for touchdowns passes of 31 and 13 yards -- both in the first half -- while James Singer caught six balls for 159 yards, including a 70-yard end zone bomb.

Wideout Bert Smith also hauled in seven passes for 99 yards in the decisive victory.

"Both Singer and Smith are versatile and can line up in the slot or out wide," McCloskey said. "They both are possession and big-play receivers. Tarel Flanigan is also a big target who can run down the seam."

The Screaming Eagles took a quick 20-6 halftime lead, after Flanigan scored in the first quarter on his 31-yard TD catch and a Jacob Ledding 16-yard punt return for six points, after a Jordan Brown block.

Flanigan scored again on a 13-yard pass from McCloskey for the 20-0 lead.

Brainerd scored its lone touchdown on a two-yard dive in the second quarter, heading into halftime.

In the third quarter, secondary player Dante Mathis nabbed an interception and returned it 18 yards for six points, which was followed by McCloskey's 70-yard end zone strike to Singer and a six-yard TD scamper by Ledding.

"We also stalled three times inside their 10 yard line, so we were moving the ball well," McCloskey said.

Running back Kyler Wegner offset the Brainerd defense with 43 yards of rushing, while Lakes Area piled on 473 yards of offense to the Lumberjacks' 112.

"People have checked their egos on defense and we are using two to three offensive linemen on the defensive line and rotating them, so they are staying fresh," McCloskey added. "These players are mostly from around here and they are used to playing ironman football."

The defense also produced four more interceptions, which has been aided by good pressure by the Eagles' defensive line.

Lakes Area (5-2) wrapped up its Northern Power Football League schedule with a 2-2 record and will hold the No. 2 seed and host the No. 3 Minnesota Sting Saturday, July 17, in Frazee at 5 p.m.

Menomonie, Wis., has the top seed and will host the winner July 24, on the St. John's University Football Field.
