Laker U-12's going to state

There have been some trials and tribulations for the Detroit Lakes U-18 softball team during summer league play, but they are picking up the most valuable factor, win or lose, and that's experience.

The wins are not being sacrificed, though, as the Laker U-18 squad split with Norman County East at Snappy Park Tuesday.

Behind the strong pitching of Sasha Cook, the Lakers downed NCE 17-2 in the first game, then dropped the second by a 10-1 score.

"Sasha pitched well again for us, giving up just three hits," said DL head coach Phil Kirchner. "We have to mix a lot of young and inexperienced girls, so there are some growing pains.

"We had some errors in the second game and we just have to fight through those."

Brianna Seebold and Hannah Ianiro each had three hits in a 17-hit attack in the opening tilt.

DL jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the first inning, with 10 hits in that frame alone.

"They were hitting the ball hard, that's good to see from our young girls," Kirchner said.

The Lakers are now 2-4 and will play in Hawley Tuesday.

The U-14 team were swept by NCE Tuesday, as well.

U-12 squad qualifies for state tournament

A sweep over Alexandria in the U-12 girls' league in Fergus Falls ensured a state trip for the DL team Thursday.

The Lakers bested Alexandria by the scores of 7-3 and 5-1 to clinch a berth in the upcoming J.O. State Tournament, which is July 30-Aug. 1 in Cloquet.

Chaz Butz won the first game from the mound with a 5-1 win, while Grace Swenson pitched for the victory in game two, 7-3.

Emily Seebold had three hits, a triple and four RBIs on the night.

Last week, the Lakers throttled Fergus Falls 14-0 as Butz threw a one-hitter and recorded seven strikeouts.

She added two hits, including a home run.

In the second game of the evening, Kyra Vagle tossed for the win in a 13-7 triumph for DL.

Maycen Kirchner had two hits and two RBIs in the victory.
