Izzo's on path of progression

Izzo's VFW coach Taylor Fuhs talks to pitcher Ben Gailfus (16) during their game against Perham Tuesday evening at Washington Ballpark.

For the Detroit Lakes Izzo's VFW players, the next step is right around the corner.

It's the job of head coach Taylor Fuhs to prepare them to round that corner smoothly as the VFW season progresses.

After a convincing sweep of East Grand Forks last week by the scores of 11-10 and 22-3, the Izzo's squad has potentially done just that, after starting the season with six straight losses.

"We recently have turned things around," Fuhs said. "We are going to stay with the fundamentals and learn how to see the ball, field the ball and throw strikes.

"That is my job, to get them ready for the next level."

Travis Dorff, Alex Ziegler and Ben Gailfus have been DL's main cogs of the pitching rotation, with four to five other pitchers seeing action as well.

So far, Fuhs has concentrated on focusing his pitchers to throw strikes, along with changing up their speeds, adding some curveballs and hitting their spots on the plate.

"We also have Luke Morgan and Jacob Johnson coming in for relief," Fuhs added.

With most young teams, defensive struggles are evident, and that's no different for Izzo's.

"Again, we are focusing on their mechanics and fielding a lot of grounders," Fuhs said.

But the defense is also showing improvement, as DL had only two errors combined in its sweep over EGF.

Offensively, Fuhs is more than happy with what he is seeing from his players.

"They are very good at the plate," the VFW coach added. "They can hit the ball well."

Johnson leads the way offensively with an average hovering around the .500 area, while first baseman Brady Wilberg is providing power in the lineup.

"I'm also impressed with the team's baserunning, they are very smart on the pads," Fuhs said.

The VFW squad plays all its home games at Washington Ballpark, up to the playoffs, which start in late July.
