DL pulls off rare victory over TRF

The Detroit Lakes girls' tennis team went 1-3 in their latest four-game stretch Thursday and Friday.

The Lakers pulled off a split at home Friday, taking down Thief River Falls 4-3, while falling to Fergus Falls 5-2.

"This is the first time in about seven or eight years we have beat Thief River Falls," said DL head coach Kris Omberg. "They are typically strong, but our girls had high expectations for themselves and came out firing."

The Lakers took three singles matches, while winning the top doubles match to secure the victory.

With the dual match score tied at 3-3, the scales of victory came down to the fourth singles match, as DL's Shantel Kluenenburg was battling TRF sophomore Sheena Lee.

Kluenenburg won the third-set tiebreaker 9-7 for the decisive match.

"It was a great confidence builder for our kids," Omberg said.

Other victories came at No. 1 singles with Joelle Langworthy over Taylor Genereux and Katie Anderson at No. 2 over Karlee Jorgenson.

DL's No. 1 doubles team of Tess Hamre and Brianna Seebold were triumphant 6-4, 6-1 over Wendy Rima and Sabrina Okeson.

The Otters swept through doubles and won singles play in three and four, while DL No. 1 singles Langworthy and No. 2 Anderson each recorded the win for the Lakers.

"Fergus Falls has a strong lineup returning this year," Omberg said. "I thought we competed very well, which is something we are continually working on with the team."

The Lakers fell to Mid-State Conference foes Park Rapids 6-1 and Crosby-Ironton 4-3 Thursday.

Langworthy won a hard-fought No. 1 singles match over Park Rapids' Bailey LaCourise with a 7-3 third-set win, while DL nearly missed the win over C-I.

"Our girls were disappointed with the conference loss (versus Park Rapids), but came out strong and confident against C-I," Omberg added. "Our effort was 10 times better and it showed on the court and in the set scores."

The Lakers will travel to Wadena-Deer Creek Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. start.
