DL can't finish tiebreakers

Despite losing to East Grand Forks by a 6-1 score, the Detroit Lakes girls tennis team was just short of making the score plenty different in the Lakers' Thursday triangular.

DL brought three third-set tiebreakers against EGF, but lost in every one to set up the lopsided final score.

Only the Laker No. 1 doubles team of senior Tess Hamre and junior Brianna Seebold scored a victory, with a pair of 6-1 wins over Erika Prichett and Katie Berggren.

It was the tiebreakers where the Lakers really faltered, said DL head coach Kris Omberg.

"We struggled closing the door," Omberg said. "The girls have not played many tiebreakers, so they don't have experience having the right mind set for them."

In a tiebreaker, a slow start is detrimental -- it's hard to make up ground because the sets are much quicker.

"You can't make up ground if you fall down early," Omberg said. "We are working a lot on tiebreaker scenarios in practice to make it a more common experience for them."

Bemidji won 7-0 over the Lakers and proved they will be a tough out come playoff time.

"Bemidji is so fundamentally sound and they have a lot of numbers out," the DL coach said. "They are a high-caliber team and it's good for our girls to play up against good tennis played like that."

The Lakers competed in the Mid-State Conference meet over the weekend in Park Rapids and will now polish up for the home stretch towards the Sub-Section meet, which is held in Grand Forks, N.D., Oct. 12-13.
